Levofloxacin is a third generation broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic. It is an optical (L) active isomer of ofloxacin with an increased antimicrobial activity against a number of Gram-positive and Gram-negative microorganisms, mycoplasmas, spirochetes, Chlamydia spp., Rickettsia spp. Levofloxacin represents a reliable solution in patients infected with drug-resistant pathogens and it is considered a drug of last solution when treatment with other antibiotics has failed, especially in last respiratory infections (levofloxacin is as so called “respiratory quinolone”).
